Think about the setup
Consider what will give the best result in terms of whether you want to be alone, or if there should be more people discussing the topics. When you do your first podcast, you probably have an awkward feeling, since speaking alone in a podcast is new. It can therefore be useful to ask a colleague to participate.
- 2
Create a manuscript
It is a good idea to plan what you are going to say beforehand. The manuscript is a good idea, as you want notes for an outline of the topics, so there is a common thread. This way, you also avoid using filler words and potentially ending up with confusing side stories whilst recording. Remember that the listeners have nothing graphic to hold it against, so it must be kept simple and easy to follow. By planning your podcast, it also helps you stay on track and ensures that you speak in a precise and understandable manner about your research.
- 3
Keep your podcast between 20-40 minutes
It is difficult to talk about an ideal length for a podcast since the topic etc. can vary quite a bit. However, it is generally a good rule of thumb to keep it between 20-40 minutes. Many people use podcasts as an additional activity while on the go or doing other practical tasks. Therefore, this is an appropriate time interval. In addition, it is also important to think about, depending on how "heavy" a subject is, and to keep it relatively short, precise, and easy to understand.

minimise background noise
In podcasts, it is the sound that is at the center, and it is therefore very important to think about how the listeners receive your production. One way to ensure the best quality is by controlling external noise and errors in the recordings.
Sit in a room where you are alone and cannot hear colleagues, children, or the coffee machine in the background. In addition, it is beneficial to think about whether the chair squeaks, and remember that your phone must be on silent. You can also risk that there is a lot of reverberation where you record, which you can avoid by using a cloth to put over you and the microphone while you record.
By minimizing external sounds, you get a product that is easier for listeners to concentrate on.
- 5
Use the right equipment
Another way to minimize noise and improve the sound quality is to use a good microphone and generally the right equipment.
As an employee at AAU, you have the opportunity to get help and borrow equipment or facilities for the production of e.g. video and podcast. One of the options is to borrow a suitcase with all the technical equipment that you will need. The equipment comes in a rolling case, also called a trolley, which you can take with you.
To borrow equipment, as an employee, you can write to cdul@iaspbl.aau.dk and make a further arrangement.

Make a sample recording
Make a test recording where you listen and assess whether the sound is good before you go ahead and record your entire podcast. In this way, you can both check whether the sound is good and whether your outline makes sense for the listener.

Publish new podcasts regularly
If you start publishing a podcast, it is not necessarily important how often you publish your podcast, but that you publish them regularly. Therefore, it is a good tip to choose a weekday to publish your podcast, e.g. every Friday, every other Friday, or the first Friday of the month. This will help you gain loyal listeners that you can retain. Therefore, think about a realistic schedule in relation to how often you will be able to publish before you start, as it is more important to keep the cadence than to produce many.
